Think Pink

4:23 AM

I feel like my daughter is getting to that girly stage.
Wait. No. That's wrong.
I feel like I'm getting to that girly stage with my daughter. I mean, she is only one and a bit, how much girly girl stuff can she want, it must be me. The pink lover in me is starting to come out.
When I used to design baby clothes I was fed up with all the floral and pink. I guess designing and looking at it day in day out for a couple of years got the best of me, but having a daughter...
Well, let's say I have no problem with pink now. It's fun, girly (I don't see anything wrong with that, but that's a whole different post) and PINK! Yay! It feels so good to let that out, I like pink!
Now, I'm not a fan of all pinks, I'm still very picky when it comes to that color. I like the more antique pinks, dusty rose, it all sounds very romantic. And then you have your dark deep pinks, ahh, what fun!
There's something calming to me when it comes to pink, maybe I think about my daughter, her room and soft rosy cheeks, maybe it's when I think about pink cotton candy, how sweet and fluffy it is. It just makes me a bit calmer and breathe a bit better.

(Excuse me, I know it's not Friday, I may be a day late, it's not easy with a teething toddler!)

Check out some other cool pink stuff-

- I love colored glass

- Perfect dress!

- This may be a last summer trend but it's still pretty awesome. I'd love to float around on one of these!

- This might be on my birthday list.

- This print is pretty cute for my daughters bedroom

Binding off (finally)

12:38 PM

About a year and a half ago I started this baby quilt.
And when I say baby, I mean, it's a teeny quilt. There is no excuse as to why it took me THIS long. Actually, I do know why it took me forever. I just wasn't that into it.

I'm not sure why. The fabrics are cheery and fun. The pattern isn't too complex, but isn't too simple it would bore me. I was just struggling with loving it.

I think all in all it took me about two weeks to complete the top, and then it sat for a good year waiting for the filling. I kept seeing it on my table, folded up nicely. Waiting, and I piled some more stuff on top, trying to forget I needed to complete it.
But then, one weekend, I just sat down, pinned everything together, and starting sewing everything together. I knew it had to be done and I just couldn't put it off anymore.

The whole binding process took about a day. Since it's so itty bitty it was super quick. And you know what, I actually love the finished product. It's so bright and fun, simple and still looks somewhat difficult (to the non quilter lol!).

I always have a rule, don't do something you really really love, or it will never get done. I have too many projects laying around the house that I just can't get past that certain point. Not because I don't love the fabric or yarn, or project, but because I wasen't 100% sure I wanted to do it in the first place.

Do what you love. Not a cliché!

Fabrics are all from Cloud 9 fabrics, from the Arcadia line by Sarah Watson

life

11:43 AM

I've put my illustration "hobby" aside for now and have been focusing more on sewing and knitting.
It might have something to do with my first sale (yay! and great feedback) and then another sale just a few days later!
It's actually a special request order, and we built the quilt around her boys likes and room color. I'm really exciting about it. It's more of a plain design, which is definitely not me, I'm more into the-more complex-the-merrier! but it is fun to work per request and have someone ekse tell you how THEY want it to look. Plus a bunting to go with, so that should be fun.
I've looked into some craft fairs, but I have to stock up on my inventory. I'm currently knitting a blanket and finishing of the binding for a stroller quilt. Whew! And I plan on completing another quilt this week. lot's to do! My mod is racing.

I've been having a couple of rough weeks, both work and personal life, I know it always comes round the same time of the year, when we have a ton of work and I feel like I'm just cracking under all the pressure. I know that in the beginning of March I might be getting promoted to a different position. That definitely helps me keep going.
I felt like work-wise I was pretty stuck, and starting to get a move on my life outside of work, rally helped me get out of my muck.

All in all I feel pretty good and confident in what I'm doing and selling. Which is more important, right? well, that and sales and a happy customer!

This weekend was rainy and gloomy, so no pictures of anything at all. Hopefully by next weekend it will be sunnier and I'll have two projects to photograph and put up for sale.

Hope you have a wonderful and warm and cozy weekend!

Struggling with creativity

12:37 AM

I'm working on some milestone cards right now. Getting back to illustrating has been difficult.
I used to hand draw everything, scan it, and then go over it with so many changes in illustrator. Looking back at some of my before work, I don't know how I actually drew it, or even thoguht of the idea.
It feels like my head is blank. No ideas. No inspiration.

Now work

I'm really struggling, and it feels horrible. I signed up to some online doodling/sketchbook courses, but I feel like I'm not actually getting anywhere. The pen and pad used to be my favorite tool and I filled my sketchbook up within a week, now I have the same pad for... It's embarrassing to say how long.

Then work

I can't remember what the trick, or secret is. I feel like I'm missing out on something.
I try to go through pinterest and save some of my favorite pictures, trying to figure out why I like it so much, what inspires me, the colors, but I truly feel like I'm at a dead end.

I'm going to try a weekly drawing challenge, hopefully that can help me actually sit and draw/sketch/doodle.
Hopefully that will help bring back my creativity and confidence in what I do.
This feeling really stinks :-/

Friday Favorites

12:43 AM

 Love me some flowers!
I absolutely love flower arrangements. I love the bright cheery colors, yellows and greens. I try (try!) to have flowers in my house every weekend. Not always possible, every two weeks is just as good.
I've been wanting to buy Holly Beckers book- Decorate With Flowers for the longest time. Maybe do a flower arrangement course. Oh, to have to unlimited time and money to do such things...

I'm trying to get my life together

10:57 AM

Life doesn't always go as planned.
For some people, things just magically always fall in plcae for them, for others, it's always an uphill struggle. Thankfully, I'm not there. Life for me is just sometimes... Trying.
It's not easy.
I've always struggled with my career, I'm not even sure I got into the arty world for the right reasons. I always wanted to be a psychiatrist. Something happened along the way and played around with my head, and I decided I wanted to direct video clips. Or at least a soundtrack editor. I think Pulp Fiction made that decision really easy for me to make.
But things happened, and I found myself sending out resumes to just any graphic designer job, hoping something would catch. I was ready to start from zero, because it was supposed to be temporary. Until I got my life together.
But it caught. And I was good at what I did. And I moved up. I found myself as a textile designer, product manager. And I loved what I was doing, but it became temporary, not because I wanted to. Life happens. People have other plans for you.
And then this job happened. And I am as far away from going back to textiles and designing as Pluto is from Earth. I feel like I was definitely kicked out of the club. That ship has sailed. It hit me today and I found myself crying in the middle of a shopping center. I just felt so low today.

I've been trying to get my life together. Career wise. Sewing, graphics, digital downloads. Maybe today was what I needed. A kick in the behind. I just hope it's more that a sore spot now, and I actually get myself together. I'm having a hard time keeping my head above the water.

Quilt a long!

11:28 PM

I'm hosting my first quilt a long!
I'm so excited, I've been wanting to do it for a while. It's for a local group of mainly beginners, we've been talking about it a lot and I decided to give it a go and help them out. The whole process is exciting, and it's good to have a group to hold your hand as you get through it the first time.
I remember my first quilt, it was a simple zigzag chevron.
I remember browsing quilts on pinterest and coming across a quilt, I clicked and got to a (very old) quilt a long. It seemed easy enough, charm squares, half square triangle, easy, right? And it was! That was the beginning of a hobby.
I bought a whole bunch of charm packs in the beginning because I was mostly afraid of cutting. I don't have a lot of patience (or, didn't have, I guess patience comes with motherhood) and didn't always cut exactly by the measurment given. I was kind of like, eh meh, it'll all come together.
Wrong! I needed to be exact (like baking!) otherwise it would all come out wonky looking. Pre-cuts made it so much easier in the beginning. Since then I've graduated onto yards and fat quarters and cutting all different shapes and sizes, but I still have a warm spot in my heart for those charm squares.
Half square triangles are amazing. You can do SO much with them! Seriously. It's like a puzzle, just put it all together in the end so it looks nice and to your liking and you're good to go.

So, the Quilt-a-long. Today I'll be cutting my fabric, I have some colorful stuff from Bonnie & Camille, April Showers. I might get to sewing the squares as well, we'll see how much time I have in between Abigails naps.
I would love to share the instructions here as well, but that might be further down the road, after I translate it as well.

In the meantime, here are some of my favorite half square triangle quilts.
Have a wonderful weekend!
